Causes of Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a common condition in people across age group especially youngsters. Some common causes of Scoliosis are:

  • Neuromuscular Conditions

Scoliosis can develop in patients suffering from neuromuscular conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, etc.

This is due to muscular imbalances and weakness leading to Scoliosis.

Physiotherapy can help with the management of the condition, reduce pain and other secondary complications.

  • Injuries/Infections to Spine

Sometimes due to infection or trauma in the spine, the height of the vertebrae reduces which leads to Scoliosis.

Treatment is managed either conservatively (without surgery) or by surgery. Physiotherapy can help with the management of the condition, to reduce pain and other secondary complications.

  • Birth Defects

Birth defects that affect the infant’s spine can lead to Scoliosis. People with a family history of scoliosis are more likely to develop this condition. Sometimes, even surgery on the chest wall as a baby may lead to Scoliosis.

Physiotherapy can help with the management of the condition, reduce pain and other secondary complications.

  • Osteoporosis

Degenerative changes that occur with old age causes weakening of the spinal cord and changes the shape of the vertebrae leading to limitation of functions and an increase in pain.

Physiotherapy can help with increasing muscle strength and flexibility leading to improvement in functional activities.
