Causes of Shoulder Pain

20+ medical conditions may affect your shoulder muscles, joints, bones or nerves. Some common conditions causing pain are:

  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive capsulitis)

Frozen shoulder is a painful condition which occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the three shoulder bones, namely, upper arm (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula), and collarbone (clavicle), thickens and becomes tight.

This causes pain and limits the motion of the affected shoulder joint.

  • Rotator cuff tear

Rotator cuff is the group of muscles & tendons that keep the head of the upper arm within the shoulder socket.

It generally happens when a person is involved in activities that require their hands to be away from the shoulder or above their heads for prolonged periods. Eg. badminton & lawn tennis players.

Physiotherapy helps in increasing the muscle strength & range of motion.

  • Dislocation of shoulder

A shoulder dislocation is usually due to a fall or blow to the shoulder causing the upper arm to pop out of its socket.

An orthopedic surgeon would recommend using a sling for a few weeks to immobilize the affected shoulder joint. This would lead to stiffness in the shoulder.

A physiotherapist can help in reducing the pain & stiffness at the earliest and recommend muscle strengthening exercises to avoid dislocation again & again.

  • Tendinitis

Shoulder Tendinitis is a common injury caused due to inflammation in the tendons due to prolonged over head action (Swimming, Cricket balling, Tennis etc).

Due to the pain & inflammation the patient would face issues in performing daily activities. A physiotherapist can help in resuming daily activities via muscle strengthening.

Surgery might be required if the condition becomes severe or chronic.

Accurate diagnosis is must for a timely & complete recovery. Find the joint, muscle, nerve causing you pain
